The Census Bureau has released the 2020 Census Redistricting Data. The data is also available to be viewed on their interactive map. Over the last 10 years, Northeast Georgia’s population grew 14.7% (total 2020 population of 657,220). Eight of the region’s 12 counties saw population increases greater than 10% between 2010 and 2020, and only two counties experienced population decreases.

A recording of Gina Wright’s, Executive Director of the Georgia Legislative & Congressional Reapportionment Office, presentation at our regional County Managers’ Meeting is available HERE.

City Councils can perform local redistricting without the requirement of State approval under the principle of Home Rule, but all other local maps must be approved by the State. A state senator or representative sponsor is required for redistricting requests that require State approval. The State Reapportionment Office is available to assist with redistricting map creation at no charge; the NEGRC is available to assist for a local fee.

NEGRC staff are working to synthesize the data release and prepare materials specific to our region; if you have any questions about the redistricting process or have specific requests related to the 2020 Census data, contact Mark Beatty, NEGRC Director of Planning and Government Services.
